SEO is here to stay, embrace it, love it and it will reward you. Ignore it, treat it badly and it could be game over. Take the first steps to better search rankings and unlocking the potential of SEO for your business.

What is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimisation to use its full name, is the practice of optimising your website to gain better rankings in organic search results with the aim of increasing the quality and quantity of traffic to your website.

Quality traffic means people who are genuinely interested in the information, services or products you have to offer, and they are always going to convert better than poor quality traffic. Once you have the right people clicking onto your site, it’s about increasing the volume, more visitors mean more conversions, more conversions mean more sales, leads, etc. Simples!

There are multiple ways to approach search engine optimisation, but they all have the same goal in mind: get better search result rankings for the chosen keywords in order to put a website in front of users actively searching those targeted keywords.

Why is SEO important?

Google handles around 2.4 trillion searches every year, that’s 5.6 billion searches every day, 228 million per hour, 3.8 million per minute, 63,000 searches per second. You get the idea; they handle a lot of search requests from users who are actively conducting informational queries, navigational queries or transactional queries. And it is effective SEO that is going to result in your website being displayed as the place to answer that query or need, rather than a competitor’s.

Take this blog post for example. It serves to share our knowledge and give advice to our customers – but it also helps with our own SEO.

There are over 30,000 ‘SEO Services’ related searches every month and as a business that offers SEO services, we want our website to show up when these searches are conducted. It’s all part of our targeted SEO plan. But just look at that potential, over 30,000 people searching the service that we offer every month. Even if we only get 1% of that traffic, that would be 300 people visiting our website who are actively searching for what we do, 300 people reading our content on how we can help them with their exact requirement. If we can convert just 10% of those visitors into clients, then that is 30 new clients every month.

Now just think that on average the first position in search results gets a click through rate of 32.5%, so having that position for ‘SEO Services’ related keywords would generate 9,750 visitors every month who are actively searching for our service. You can do the maths from there.

Think about the impact that type of potential could have on your business. But also think about the amount of opportunities you are missing out on by not optimising your website for search engines. Someone must have that number one position; if it’s not you then it will be your competitor. Can your business afford to miss out?

How can SEO help my business?

It can put your business in front of a huge audience who are actively looking for your products or services

That is the short answer. In truth SEO can do so much more for your business and can be instrumental in the future success of your business. Want more sales? SEO can help. Want more leads? SEO can help. Want to increase your brand reputation? SEO can help. Want to increase your customer database? SEO can help. Want to touch more people with your marketing efforts? SEO can help. Want to know what products to launch next? SEO can help. Want to know what your potential customers are searching for? SEO can help. SEO can help your business in so many ways.

Here are 10 more reasons why your business should focus on SEO:

  1. SEO builds expertise, authority and trust (E.A.T.)
  2. SEO is relatively cost effective
  3. SEO is quantifiable
  4. SEO is a long-term strategy with big potential rewards
  5. SEO can influence the buying cycle
  6. Local SEO unlocks more local opportunities
  7. Good SEO includes delivering a great website
  8. Organic search is the primary source of quality website traffic
  9. SEO brings new opportunities
  10. SEO is fun and exciting!
Ok, that last point isn’t exactly a business benefit, but we think it is pretty fun and exciting when we execute an SEO plan that takes a client from being in the SEO wilderness to dominating the coveted 1st positions for their selected keywords. They think it is pretty cool as well.

Take the first steps to better search rankings and unlocking that potential

Now that we have shown you the potential that comes from good SEO and explained why it should be a focus for your business, you’ll be asking yourself; “where do I start?”

You don’t need to be an SEO guru to get results.

The world of SEO is ever changing, ever evolving with Google updates, new technology and new trends so it can be difficult and time consuming to stay on top of it all, especially when you have multiple plates to spin and so many more priorities. However, there are core principles and best practices that have always been the foundations to good SEO and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. Having even a basic understanding of these principles and best practices will get you on the right path to SEO success. There is a wealth of information online about SEO, Google even offer free courses to give you the basics, so we suggest you roll up your sleeves and get stuck in.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. I do that every day. Asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. It shows you have the courage to admit when you don’t know something, and to learn something new.” – Barack Obama

However, there comes a point when you will hit a ‘ceiling’ and there will be no other option than to bring in an SEO expert. The ceiling might be because of a lack of knowledge, a lack of resources, wanting to work more efficiently or because you want an experienced head to guide you around the pitfalls of SEO. Whatever it may be, being able to acknowledge that you have taken things as far as you can and that you need to bring in experts is key.

Have questions? Not sure where to begin? Want an expert to guide you?
