"This is a really great project for us to get involved with."

Creating greener habitats

We stepped into the great outdoors this month to kick off the Urban Buzz pollinator habitat project on the Solar System Cycle Greenway near Naburn, York.

Working with York Greenways as part of York Cares Team Challenge Week, we cleared invasive species, cut down stinging nettles (ouch), and planted wildflowers and seeds which will encourage pollinators such as bees, hoverflies and butterflies.

Partners Group director Monica Green said: "This is a really great project for us to get involved with. York has a fantastic network of cycle paths which also provide perfect natural habitats for insects and small animals. We had great fun helping to maintain and improve them for local wildlife, residents and visitors to enjoy."

York Greenways exists to protect and enhance the ecology of traffic-free routes from York into the surrounding countryside. It works in partnership with organisations such as Sustrans, City of York Council, Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and employee-volunteering charity York Cares.
